2006 J Davies Cabernet Sauvignon, Diamond Mountain District
79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Malbec, 6% Petit Verdot
I’m a fan of the older J Davies wines, and this was a solid wine, but nothing special according to my tastes. It’s rich and smooth with bright fruit, and mellow acid. Very little oak, and a short finish. Personally, I thought it was unbalanced though, and pushing too much fruit. It’s 14.6% alcohol, big ripe red fruits, a lower acid profile, and no real earthiness. After the first glass, the fruit gets to be too much.
I’ve fallen in love with Malbecs from Cahors and Salta for their leaner acid and sometime grittiness, but California Malbec kills it for me. Too Much Fruit. It’s the same disappointment with Syrah. In this wine it feels like it’s driving too much fruit. I would rather see more Cab, or some spikier Petit Verdot to balance.
I drank the ‘05 of with friends a few weeks ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. And I’m looking forward to the ‘07 too. Lately though, what I’m finding is that I gravitate toward the odd years coming out of Napa right now, especially ‘03 and ‘05. But the odds, like ‘04 and ‘06 have been disappointments for my tastes.
I’ve also had this and I will say, more Cab por favor! Nice write-up and read kitten!
