The Absinthe Minded Martini

Since today is typically synonymous with partaking in smoking cannabis I figured I’d take it a step farther and share with all of you crypt creepers another mind altering spirit that is shrouded in mystery, then banned and now back for public consumption the green fairy, Absinthe. The precise origin of absinthe is still unclear. The medical use of wormwood dates back to ancient Egypt. Wormwood extracts and wine-soaked wormwood leaves were used as remedies by the ancient Greeks. Moreover, there is evidence of the existence of a wormwood-flavoured wine, absinthites oinos, in ancient Greece.

It was once thought that excessive absinthe drinking had worse effects than those associated with overindulgence in other alcoholic drinks, a belief that led to diagnoses of the disease of “absinthism”. One of the first vilifications of absinthe was an 1864 experiment in which Dr. Magnan exposed a guinea pig to large doses of pure wormwood vapour and another to alcohol vapours. The guinea pig exposed to wormwood experienced convulsive seizures, while the animal exposed to alcohol did not. Magnan would later blame the chemical thujone, contained in wormwood, for these effects.

Here’s how we do it up in the Crypt:

3 oz Tanqueray Gin
½ oz Vieux Pontarlier Absinthe
½ oz Grand Marnier Liqueur
½ oz dry Vermouth
1 orange peel

Properly chill a cocktail glass. In mixing glass with ice, pour gin and absinthe, and stir. In your cocktail glass, roll 1/2 oz of dry vermouth and throw away the excess. Strain other ingredients into cocktail glass and float 1/2 oz of Grand Marnier over top. Garnish with an orange peel and serve to all your ghoul friends! Viva la Liquor and bottoms up, Kittens!
